What is a knee dislocation?
The knee joint is made up of different bones, ligaments and cartilage. With a knee injury, patients may suffer from damage to several parts of the knee. For example, a knee dislocation or multiligament injury occurs when two or more ligaments of the knee are torn. Single ligament tears are more common, but multiligament tears with dislocated knee symptoms are possible and do happen to a number of patients.
What causes a knee dislocation?
A knee dislocation is a severe injury that gives patients chronic knee pain . The knee and ligaments are overstretched to a point of tearing. Injury to the ACL, MCL or LCL individually is where one part of the knee is torn instead of two or all three. Common causes of a full knee dislocation include:
- A hard and high-speed impact to the knee
- Landing directly on your knee from a tall height
- Serious trauma where the entire body is thrown or hit
A dislocated knee diagnosis can be seen many times in patients who were involved in serious car accidents. Since multiligament injuries are rare, this form of chronic knee pain occurs in more extreme cases.
How do I know if I have a knee dislocation?
A single ligament tear is painful and causes chronic knee pain to patients. A multiligament injury is even worse. Above all, the knee will suffer from great pain if there is a tear to two or more ligaments. Other dislocated knee symptoms or signs of multiligament injury are:
- All around swelling of the knee joint
- The knee is weak and cannot carry even light weight
- The knee joint cannot be controlled, bent or stabled
How do I prevent knee dislocations?
Serious trauma to the knee is sudden and never planned. It may seem impossible to completely prevent a dislocated knee diagnosis, but patients can care for their knee and ligaments every day. Caring for your knees on a regular basis can help avoid injuries in full or keep the dislocated knee pain from growing into an irreversible condition. Patients can prevent knee dislocations by:
- Regularly stretching the knee so all ligaments are flexible
- Staying within the range of motion for your knee joint
- Exercising the knee so the muscles around the ligaments are strengthened
